The IEC has put forward a dozen reasons why the egg industry worldwide should focus on promoting the goodness of eggs:
1. Eggs are one of the most versatile foods in their own right or as an ingredient.
2. Eggs have a high nutrient density because, in proportion to their calorie count, they provide 12 percent of the daily
value for protein along with a wide variety of other nutrients such as vitamin A, B6, B12, folate, iron, phosphorous
and zinc. With just 75 calories an egg, provides a lot of nutrition for relatively few calories.
3. The quality of egg protein is so high that scientists often use eggs as the standard by which the protein quality of
other foods is measured. All the important amino acids, building blocks of body protein, are found in an egg in the
right proportions for the body’s needs.
4. Two-thirds of the fat in an egg is of the healthy unsaturated type. The fat helps the body absorb nutrients such as
vitamins A, D, E and K.
5. Eggs are one of the best protein buys.
6. Eggs are a suitable food for any time of the day.
7. The yolk is an excellent source of choline, a nutrient considered essential for human health. It can be required for the
formation of brain tissue and memory and can also play a role in preventing heart disease.
8. Lutein and zeaxanthin are two newly recognized nutrients that have put eggs in the “functional foods” category,
providing health benefits beyond their basic nutrient content. The consumption of lutein and zeaxanthin has been
shown to significantly lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness
affecting people over 65.In addition, there is less likelihood of cataract that often accompanies ageing.
9. On weekends, when time is not an issue, eggs can be used as part of an elegant, luxurious brunch or dessert.
10. For those concerned about weight loss, research indicates that the increased protein from eating eggs coupled with a
reduced carbohydrate intake can stabilize blood sugar and reduce between-meal snacking.
11. Eating eggs is good for all age groups but particularly children, the protein helping to build muscle.
12. Creating a focal point such as World Egg Day enables marketers to use their imaginations to stimulate awareness of
eggs and increase their consumption.
